Your own Private Idaho...In upstate NY

4.jpg copy 2It's definitely old news by now, but I just recently had the pleasure of spending one night at Kate Pierson's very own motel, Lazy Meadow, nestled comfortably in the vast Catskill Mountain region. Though it may not have been the most traditional of honeymoon spots, the experience and the motel were so very unique that it deserves mention on these pages.

Anyone familiar with Pierson and her quirky, kitschy post-punk turned pop outfit the B-52s should know what to expect from the singer's motel. Lazy Meadow is located near both Woodstock and Phoenicia, two sparse but beautiful upstate NY towns, and though a mere blip on the country highway with little "fun" to be found nearby, it's quite a breath of fresh air.

1.jpg copy 3First things first, we explored the grounds. Though upstate New York may not be the most happening place in the world, there is enough fun to be found just poking around the premises. Gnomes hang from trees, colored lights hang on wooden slabs, and even the garbage cans are spruced up with several neat looking plants sprouting from within. The motel has several different options, including a small 1 bedroom fixture (our choice of bedding for the evening), large houses with decks (perfect for a weekend getaway with friends), and airstream trailers, complete with unique names and grilling capabilities. These airstreams are the final stop on the grounds, but just outside lies a vast, flowing river, a fire pit, and a gorgeous view from all angles.

3.jpg copy 3Our room was kitsch heaven, and I'm not even sure we discovered all the little trinkets and surprises in store in just one night. The living room wall was painted as a river/forest backdrop, with gnomes riding in inner tubes and actual plastic butterflies protruding (all pictured right). The other walls varied in color, a warm yet quirky setting. The bedroom was perhaps the most normal of the rooms, but the bedding and lamp fixtures still were still like nothing I had ever seen. The bathroom floor would give those sensitive to color a seizure, but those who enjoy such a mixture of color would be delighted.

2.jpg copy 2As previously mentioned, the surrounding areas offer little to no nightlife, especially if you're used to the hustle and bustle of New York City, but fret not, Lazy Meadow has the perfect solution for this. The motel offers a large selection of b-movies, perfect for a night in. I unfortunately had little time to partake in them, but if you glance at the photo to the right, I bet few are familiar, and most are tons of fun. We almost missed them, again proving that Lazy Meadow is chock full of little surprises.

Sadly, we didn't chuck in any B-52s records on the stereo, but all the same, Lazy Meadow met all my wildest expectations. Kate Pierson, as if I needed any more reason to love you.
