CMJ Band: O'Death
Throughout the month, we will be profiling a few of the bands playing at this year's CMJ Music Marathon, which kicks off October 16th.
Bluegrass is a tough genre for a NYC band to tackle; its lackadaisical vibe is rarely appreciated by New Yorkers and their chaotic lives. Nevertheless, indie hicks O'Death take a chance on the neglected genre.
The six piece collaboration infuses their bluegrass roots with an energetic chaos, generating a distinct and exciting sound. If you're tired of traditional guitar and drum bands, these guys integrate a variety of instruments into their music: fiddles, ukuleles, banjos, trombones, etc.
Thanks to their lively performance and ironic existence, O'Death has developed a strong reputation among Brooklyn concert-goers. The buzz has translated to favorable publicity from local bloggers, which eventually made them Pitchfork worthy.
O'Death will be playing two shows during CMJ. On 10/18, they play Soundfix Records at 9 pm - - the next day, they play Union Pool. A week later, they kick off a European tour. Bluegrass in Europe? Looking forward to hearing the results of that tour.
