List: My 9 Favorite TV Commercial Songs
9. Geico: Caveman at the airport -- "Remind Me" by Royksopp
Probably the best-soundtracked of the immensely popular "Caveman" series of Geico ads. The song, as it appears here, is actually a remix that Royksopp did themselves specifically for this commercial.
8. Gears of War -- "Mad World" by Gary Jules
Gary Jules' cover of this Tears for Fears depressed-fest, from the 2001 film Donnie Darko, was resurrected in 2006 for an ad touting the release of Gears of War on Xbox 360. The ad was so popular that it has spawned dozens of unofficial "extended versions" on YouTube.
7. Aiwa Sound -- "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen
Classic song + VERY funny.
6. Levi's Jeans -- "Walk the Line" by Adem Ilhan and Megan Wyler
In the wake of all the buzz surrounding the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, Levi's did a series of three commercials using that film's title track, as redone by Adem Ilhan and Megan Wyler (I don't know who they are, either...). One version of the ad shows only the man's perspective, and another cut shows only the woman's; but this one is the really cute duet version.
5. Sony Rolly -- "Skitzo Dancer" (Justice remix) by Scenario Rock
Sony's new toy--a robotic, rolling laser-light-show-meets-boom-box--gets the treatment from the ubiquitous French electro-rock duo Justice, whose remix of fellow Parisians Scenario Rock's "Skitzo Dancer" is heard here. This ad makes me want a Rolly so bad!
4. Apple: iPod Touch -- "Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex" by CSS
Surprise, surprise! Apple chooses a hipster dance-party staple to soundtrack the ad for their new iPod Touch. Here's what you might not know, though: Apple bought the rights to this ad from a regular guy named Nick Haley, who really liked the product and the song, and posted his homemade advertisement on YouTube. He's rich now, and probably got a free iPod Touch out of it...lucky bastard.
3. Coca-Cola -- "Love Is the Truth" by Jack White
WTF?! Perhaps Jack White took the phrase "Get behind me, Satan" a bit too literally, resulting in his joining forces with the world's largest beverage company for this TV ad. But as much of a sell-out move as this is, the commercial is totally sweet. And the song ain't bad either. I wonder if The Almighty Pasty One wrote it on commission... Is anyone else out there thirsty for an ice-cold cola right now?
2. Sony Bravia televisions -- "Heartbeats" by Jose Gonzalez
It's not often that a single American TV commercial manages to launch the careers of not one, but TWO amazingly talented artists from Sweden. But, by launching a quarter of a million neon bouncy balls down Lombard Street in San Francisco, to the tune of Jose Gonzalez' "Heartbeats," the directorial team behind this ad managed to introduce both Gonzalez and electro-pop duo The Knife (who originally wrote and recorded this song) to the American public.
1. Volkswagen Cabrio -- "Pink Moon" by Nick Drake
Immediately upon its release, this wordless ad became the new standard-bearer for well-soundtracked TV commercials. And moreover, it brought British folk singer Nick Drake's career back from the dead - literally.
