Alexander McQueen Brings Punk Rock Muse To Target

When Target asked British couture iconoclast Alexander McQueen to launch their new Designer Collaborations program, one wonders what they thought they were getting.  Avant space opera? Dystopian fairy tales with steampunk undertones? Neither would surprise fans of McQueen, whose best work is fantastic, epic sci-fi pageantry.  If you ever sat around making wistful drawings of how Alejandro Jodorowsky’s failed version of Dune might have looked…you know, the one with Salvador Dali as the Emperor…might I suggest a careful perusal of McQueen’s website?

The designer’s new affordable collection for the chain comes off as significantly less grandiose, but with a style the Los Angeles Times is decidedly calling “punk-inflected.” This might have something to do with the bombshell plastered over the line’s T-shirts. That’s Leila Moss, who in addition to serving time as McQueen’s muse (in lieu of Nico, as the LA Times helpfully points out) is the frontwoman of British rock outfit, the Duke Spirit. With a ’90s guitar-chic-chick sensibility meets old fashion British mod, they are sort of like if the Deal sisters got wasted one night and decided to make fun of Amy Winehouse’s Crystals impression. The group also performed at the recent McQ for Target premier.
