We all knew James Franco was cute, but who figured he’d also turn out to be smart and awesome? The actor–who was fantastic in both Milk and Pineapple Express this year–appeared in a clip directed by Judd Apatow on this Sunday’s Academy Awards telecast. It was a pretty mediocre skit, except for the part when he and Seth Rogen laughed at The Reader.

But, as it turns out, Franco’s best moment of the evening happened on the red carpet. Asked about his guilty pleasure, Franco mentioned that he doesn’t really watch TV but then said, “I’m reading a great book right now by this guy, Carl Wilson.” And then he went on to rave about Let’s Talk About Love, Wilson’s fantastic 33 1/3 book on Celine Dion’s arguably terrible album. “It’s a real investigation into what constitutes taste,” said Franco. Color me impressed!
