Folk Ages Better Than Punk Rock

While his proto-posi punk rock crew never really broke up, 7 Seconds founder Kevin Seconds has just embarked on 20-city US tour.  The straight edge icon has seemingly gone the Jeff Ott route, with his newest album, Rise Up Insomniac!, furthering the folk interests apparent on a handful of solo records released since 1990. Seconds will be accompanied through the Northeast arm of his tour by Kepi Ghoulie, the former Groovie Ghoulies frontman who has taken a similarly acoustic turn of late. While Kepi’s solo output remains relatively true to his former band’s sleazy saccharine pop, one can’t help but wonder: Is acoustic balladry the new spoken word? I guess the ability to hold a tune is a pretty basic line of demarcation for the aging punk idol.  ans should check out an interview with Seconds published this week in DC’s Express, “Commited For Life” (ahem).
