Kim Gordon Launches Urban Outfitters Clothing Line
Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon looks consistently fierce onstage and around town, so it seems only natural that she’d lend some of her personal style to a clothing line. However, before you complain about another celebrity clothing line, please note that Kim Gordon has a hell of a lot more business hawking her clothes than Jessica Simpson. Or JLo. Or Lindsay Lohan (ugh, those fucking leggings). Gordon’s been an accomplished artist long before Sonic Youth’s inception, so it makes sense for her to lend these sensibilities to fashion. Plus, I’m sure there are a few of you out there who were wondering whatever happened to X-Girl, Gordon’s first fashion foray, based out of Los Angeles.
This line, made exclusively for Urban Outfitters, will be called Mirror/Dash, named for her experimental side project with Thurston Moore. Gordon is working alongside fellow fashion veterans Melinda Wansbrough and Jeffrey Monteiro, and names French songstress/style icon Françoise Hardy as the major influence on the collection’s classic feel. “I know, every designer says they’re inspired by Françoise Hardy,” Gordon told the New York Times.” But I’ve been listening to her records for 15 years.” She also noted that her line is meant to satisfy “cool moms,” so Mom Jeans will be absent. Currently, the only item available is the Hardy Jacket, retailing at $415, only at Satine in LA. Ouch, but hopefully, the rest of the collection will include garments that go easier on our wallets. Mirror/Dash will be available in Urban Outfitters stores starting Monday, February 16th, and the website should be up and running even sooner.
As for Gordon’s musical dealings, a yet-untitled Sonic Youth album is set to drop on Matador later in the year, and keep an eye out for “Sensational Fix,” a touring exhibition that highlights Sonic Youth’s many artistic directions.
