‘Tis the season for new beginnings, and Chicago-based instrumental metal band Pelican have left their longtime label, Hydra Head, for the greener pastures of Southern Lord. Both outfits are located in Los Angeles, so the location can’t have had much to do with it … a head-scratcher, indeed. Hydra Head’s blog describes the split as “amicable,” as is usually the story, but I haven’t been able to dig up anything juicy yet. Pelican’s previous ties to Southern Lord consist of drummer Larry Herweg’s cameos with Lair of the Minotaur, another band on the label’s roster. Maybe he told the rest of Pelican about Southern Lord’s superior break room snacks?

Pelican are currently recording a new “riff-oriented” EP in Seattle, tunes from which will probably pop up on this tour with Tombs and Wolves in the Throne Room.
