Who Got the Grammy Love?
This is embarrassing, but I actually forgot to watch the Grammys last night. I had just gotten off a bus from Boston, Big Love and Flight of the Conchords were on… and it just didn’t happen. Now, I hadn’t watched the telecast for years, but I was bent on seeing Radiohead and nine-months-pregnant M.I.A. perform. By the time I realized what I was missing, it was midnight.
So, this morning, I was left to recreate the evening on my own. As it turns out, M.I.A. did not disappoint. For a woman who looked like she was carrying around a watermelon under her shirt, she really got around. The performance itself was a sort of live-action mash-up of “Paper Planes” and “Swagga Like Us,” with T.I., Lil’ Wayne, Jay-Z and Kanye West joining M.I.A. onstage. And Gwyneth Paltrow–whose husband’s band has certainly stolen a few moves from the Thom Yorke play book–introduced “the utterly brilliant” Radiohead, who played “15 Step,” with help from a marching band.
As for the awards, the Best Album nod went to a relative sleeper–Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, for Raising Sand. The pair also bagged a slew of smaller honors. Then there were some obvious picks: Lil’ Wayne for Rap Album, Coldplay for Rock Album, and Radiohead for Alternative Album. My favorite win of the night was Daft Punk, who took home Best Dance Album for Alive 2007.
