Buffet Libre presents: Rewind 2
How’s a little Monday afternoon nostalgia sound to you? The lovely folks at Buffet Libre have strung together a massive amount of cover tunes by some of today’s best underground artists, and they are offering them for free download via their homepage. The project, entitled Rewind 2, focuses on songs of our yesteryear, nostalgic gems injected with new life.
There are roughly 80 tracks available for your perusal (and download), spanning two decades in scope. Most draw from the 1980s new wave scene, while other artists dip into more modern nineties hits. If anything, it’s scary for this blogger to refer to Weezer, White Town, and Marcy Playground as nostalgic, but let’s face it, I’m not getting any younger. Anyway, Buffet Libre has even gone the extra mile, including a mini-interview inquiring about each band’s intentions covering the song, adding a little dose of personality into each submission.
These sort of projects are always a little dicey in prospect, but with so many tracks to choose from, the secret to success lies in pure trial and error, as I reckon most any avid listener can find a handful of fantastic numbers should their patience prevail. Some of my very favorite tracks include NYC electro-rock outfit Cruel Black Dove’s take on the Psychedelic Furs’ “Love My Way,” the aforementioned “Sex and Candy” cover by La Chansons (which breathes a slinky and sexy edge into an otherwise bland alt-rock hit), the Sohodolls’ rendition of the Lords of the New Church dirgey “Open Your Eyes,” and Miami Horror’s Italo disco remix/rendition of Dan Hartman’s “Relight My Fire.” New Paltz indie darlings Setting Sun also contribute a cracking rendition of Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky,” while other covers tackle XTC, Electric Light Orchestra, and other less dark and dancey numbers. There are even a handful of nineties rap tunes on the slab, for those who once loved the likes of Color Me Badd and Salt N’ Pepa. There’s a little irony thrown in for good measure, which is certainly comforting.

I love that Project Jenny / Project Jan did Laura Brannigan. That song is so awesome. I still prefer the original, but I dig their take on it.
