Video: Animal Collective – “My Girls”

There’s been some talk of Animal Collective being the new Radiohead, but, to me, they’re more like the new Flaming Lips.  This might seem like an arbitrary distinction, but Radiohead, who are still trying to push the boundaries of ’90s alternative rock, never made a psychedelic album. Merriweather Post Pavillion is the next link in the chain that began with Pet Sounds and left off with The Soft Bulletin. This is game changing music; it sounds like it could only have been made in outer space and with instruments that haven’t been invented yet.

Aside from the fact that “My Girls” is goddamn amazing. I love this video because it’s like a futuristic version of one of those old studio performances from the ’70s, like when Black Sabbath would go on Top of The Pops, or something, and they’d have those prehistoric iTunes visuals play on a blue screen behind them, except here it’s actually happening. If you wanted to explain to your friend what Animal Collective are about, just show them this video.

Animal Collective are playing Terminal 5 on May 13th. They’ve probably got a crazy light show, so I wouldn’t sleep on this shit.
