Informal Brooklyn Poll: What Did You Listen To In 2007?

Posted on November 30, 2007

After venturing out to the cold streets of Brooklyn last night, to bother strangers with the above question, it occurred to me that not every neighborhood in Brooklyn might be friendly. Park Slope, or "Park Village" as one interviewee insisted I call it, was even a little surly. From one brownstoned street to the next, this particular interviewee was the only truly obliging person I met. While he didn't really answer the question, he provided so much more:

More interviews after the cut!

Dan, 53

Q: Can you tell me what music you listened to or particularly liked this past year?

A: I don't know.

Q: It can be anything, you know, maybe a radio show you listen to a lot?

A: Well my favorite DJs..are Scott and Tod on WPOJ.

Brion, 38

Q: What was your favorite music of 2007?

A: I mean, I'm not really sure.

Q: Was there any album you liked, or band you might have seen?

A: I liked Bob Dylan's new album, but I don't know the name. [ed. note: possibly Dylan 07?]

Brian, 27

KRS One at Prospect Park was my favorite show. There were people there from all over Brooklyn...there were families there. As it was going on it started raining..it was amazing.

Maria Cangiano and Gordon, of "infinite" age

Maria: I don't see shows myself, but I'm a singer/performer. Although a friend we both like is New Merika..they play hip-hop/rock.

Gordon: They sort of indirectly talk about their own politics...the guitarist is Republican [laughs].

[Maria is responsible for the World Music Nights that are free every Saturday at Biscuit BBQ.]

Daniel, 17

Q: What did you listen to in 2007?

A: [silence.]

Q: Do you remember a song you liked? Or an artist? You know, in the summer?

A: [silence.]

Q: Anything?... ?!!

A: [after a rapid discussion in Spanish with his onlooking friend] "Get Buck".

Well there you have it. Cold hard proof that you can't throw a stone in Brooklyn without hitting a musician. And that Bob Dylan will forever be popular. And..I'm not sure what else.

So in the end Park Slopers were more obliging than I let on. Although the guy in the video did complain that, "I can't even rent an apartment around here no more... Shit, I was doing better in Attica."
