Shortlist: Best Albums of 2008

As I was taking stock of my favorite albums of the year, as one inevitably does, I began to notice a certain overarching theme amongst the various genres of my picks.  Many of my favorite albums are grown out of the fertilizer of the past, some to the point of risking the label “throwback,” and yet the resulting growth is indisputably forward thinking.  This decade in indie rock could very well end up being known for groups who are more concerned with appropriation than originality (The Rapture : Gang of Four :: Black Mountain : Black Sabbath), but, maybe we’ve been missing the point; maybe it’s more about taking one’s influences and, just as American filmmakers did in the 1970s, creating something original on top of that foundation.  Well, these are the albums that, for me, best exemplify that idea:

Deerhunter, Microcastle
Vivian Girls, Vivian Girls
Magic Lantern, High Beams
Jay Reatard, Matador Singles ‘08
Fucked Up, The Chemistry of Common Life
Women, Women
The Oh Sees, The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending the Night In
Hercules and Love Affair, Hercules and Love Affair
Blank Dogs, On Two Sides
Thomas Function, Celebration
RTX, JJ Got Live RaTX
No Age, Nouns
