I Just Found Out About: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson
Yesterday, I expounded on Damien Jurado and Pwrfl Power who played at Union Hall last night, but I didn’t mention Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, the other opening act. Largely that was because I had never heard this series of names before.
I was pleasantly surprised with the performance last night, which sounded something along the lines of a Tommy Tutone cover band fronted by Isaac Brock doing a Bob Dylan impression. Robinson sings in a plaintive mumble but the band fills the room with well-informed, well-constructed, hooky pop.
Back in March Pitchfork posted a track called “Buriedfed” which doesn’t quite do justice to the heavy pop influences. It does, however, give a good sense of Robinson’s vocal apporach and fondness of starting a song quietly, building to a mid-song climax then bringing it back down.
I’m looking forward to the next time I see Robinson & co.

“Tommy Tutone cover band…” is a hilarious and pretty dead-on description. I saw MBAR open for Celebration and TVOTR @ their Pool Party in July 2007 (http://blog.limewire.com/posts/360-TVOTR-Wash-the-Day-Away-in-Brooklyn), and it must have been one of his first big shows. Needless to say, he’s come a long way since then.
