Greenpoint’s Studio B Shut Down Until Further Notice
Studio B has long been a thorn in the sides of residents on Banker and Calyer Streets in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, allegedly disturbing the heck out of its neighbors with loud noise, street trash (people and objects), and a lack of respect for the locals by its management. To be fair, I thought I was lost the first time I went to Studio B, because it seemed a bit odd to plop a multi-floor concert/dance club right in the middle of a largely residential area. Turns out “odd” is only the beginning, and a new roof deck definitely didn’t help matters, either. Greenpoint blogger Miss Heather has been covering the debacle for quite some time on newyorkshitty.com, but the issue came to a head when the venue failed a set of inspections and was forced to shut down by the New York City Department of Buildings on July 31.
This news wasn’t made known officially until today, but recent events scheduled at the club have been moved to Southpaw and other Brooklyn nightspots. Apparently, the investigation was prompted by a Community Board meeting, in which Studio B’s appeal for a cabaret license was voted down. Remember, this means that dancing was illegal at Studio B the whole time. Dude, it’s not like I could have danced there if I wanted to. Remember the Great Thermals Karaoke Sticky Floor Debacle of February 2008? I tried so hard to dance. Really, I did.
Club lawyer Ken Fisher says the owners of Studio B have corrected the violations that triggered the shutdown, but for now, the corner of Banker and Calyer will remain quiet, much to the relief of its residents. A re-inspection is scheduled to take place soon.
