SXSW Virgins: Ben & James from Kill Rock Stars
Portland, OR label Kill Rock Stars has been exemplary of the indie ethos: a principled label run with business acumen but no shortage of soul, which supports both its roster of artists and its community at large. They’ve got quite a line-up at SXSW this year, from Quasi to Grass Widow to Horse Feathers, and two of their hard-workin’ stiffs, Ben Parrish and James Squeaky, are headed south to Austin for the first time ever. SXSW Virgins: Giant Cloud
New Orleans-based quintet Giant Cloud may be young, but the sounds they make come from an older place entirely — with lush harmonies and dreamy fills, Giant Cloud are playing in their own pre-war era and taking us along for the ride. Their debut EP Old Books was released earlier this year on the Park The Van label, revealing a true embrace of Southern culture and tradition. They may not know where they’re staying, but they’re about to embrace Austin in a couple days, and offered up their first-timer perspective:
