Uncovered: The States

The States

The States

The States‘ razor-edged rock has the uncanny ability to evoke Radiohead-like dreamscapes, Zeppelin-inspired bombast, and an Orwellian political sensibility, often in the same song. Their new EP, We Are The Erasers, produced by Chris Grainger (Wilco, Switchfoot), is both intimate and grandiose, at home equally in an echoing arena and in your own headphones.

The band’s inventive songwriting has earned accolades from the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (Grand Prize Winners) and the International Songwriting Contest (Winners), and it has been featured on MTV’s “The Hills” and “The Real World,” and ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight.” Q104.3’s Jonathan Clarke recently included The States in his list of the Top 10 New York bands.

Behind the music is an unconventional lineup: a Harvard-educated singer/guitarist (Chris Snyder), a punk/acid-jazz/prog-influenced drummer (Joe Stroll), and a sonic experimentalist bassist armed with an arsenal of fuzz pedals (Pete Connors).

Download two excellent songs — “The Fight” and “Erasers” — from We Are The Erasers below, and then head over to their MySpace or thestatesonline.com to hear more.

Uncovered: ARMS

ARMS

ARMS

Anyone who was as bummed as I was to hear of the untimely demise (or “indefinite hiatus,” as they say in music-industry-speak) of the Brooklyn-based fun-for-all known as Harlem Shakes can take heart from the following news: Gigantic Music will be re-releasing Kids Aflame, the debut full-length from ARMS — Shakes guitarist Todd Goldstein’s side-project-turned-main-gig — on October 27. To get y’all good and warmed up for the big day, we’re posting two mp3s from the album for you check out below.

ARMS – “Kids Aflame”

ARMS – “Construction”

ARMS is a persona Goldstein has been crafting since 2004: a decidedly slower, sweeter, sloppier endeavor than his work with Harlem Shakes. Working alone and singing in a sad, idiosyncratic baritone, Goldstein has an ear for the beauty in noise, the primacy of melody, and the timelessness of melancholy pop music. One listen to the simple yet addictive title track to Kids Aflame is indicative of ARMS’ modus operandi: His songs are infused with lo-fi warmth, his words worm their way through our ears into the fabric of our lives. It’s the kind of music that makes you wonder if it was written just for you. And, to hear Goldstein tell it, it was: His self-proclaimed mission is “to build music that keeps lonely listeners company and guides them safely through the night.”

As Goldstein nurtures ARMS from a solo bedroom project into a full touring band this autumn, fans should expect big things, including a folio of new songs he’s currently whipping up in his Brooklyn home. In the meantime, enjoy the free mp3s here, and BUY HIS ALBUM (complete with three never-before-released bonus tracks!) when it comes out on October 27.
